Ahearne Cycles is known for unique, intelligently designed steel bicycle frames, racks, and other miscellany.

Joseph Ahearne makes his home in Portland, Oregon, where cycling is a vital part of city life. Joseph established himself building all types of custom steel bicycles and racks, from classy to wacky, elegant to eccentric.

Over recent years Joseph's focus has more steadily turned toward classic types of commuting and touring bicycles, including the randonneur, porteur, light cargo, off-road touring, general commuters and a variety of others. The theme more and more has become utilitarian -- integrated rack and frame designs; stable, useful, comfortable machines for everyday riding.

At Ahearne Cycles the utmost pride is taken in each and every aspect of frame construction. As the sole builder, Joseph Ahearne has established a solid reputation on elegant construction, skillful craftsmanship and the highest attention to detail. As a testament to the innovation and quality that Ahearne Cycles is striving to achieve, we were awarded the prize for "Best City Bike" for two years running, at the 2007 and 2008 NAHMB show.

The utilitarian bicycle presents design challenges that require unique solutions. Joseph Ahearne has a particular fondness for these challenges, and for creative problem solving. In this regard, he appreciates a quote by R. Buckminster Fuller:

"When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty. I think only on how to solve the problem. But when I am finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know It is wrong."
Joseph Ahearne hopes to one day see human powered machines as the majority on the road. He also believes that life is simply too short to ride mediocre bicycles.
